Week of May 14
Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time (4th period):
We are reading Mark Haddon's Curious Incident. A lot of the reading will be done in class, but occasionally you will be asked to read at home. Be sure you are keeping up with the reading since there will be unannounced reading quizzes along the way. Since the main character in this book suffers from autism we began the unit with some background on autism and how it affects the family unit as well. We will also watch a clip from the movie "Rainman" that may help you see what some of the struggles are. In addition, the book is set up a little differently when it comes to chapters. The chapters are listed as prime numbers, so it is important you keep up with the pages numbers for the reading assignments. You are required to keep a reading log/journal for this novel. It will be due at the end of the novel, but do NOT wait until the last minute or it will be overwhelming. You should have finished the book by last Thursday. I gave you the final writing options to complete at the end to begin working on. After the vocabulary quiz on Friday you had time to work on the final review guide and crossword puzzle (not available electronically). The packet will be due on Monday 5/14 when you take the final test over the novel.

And Then There Were None (1st Period):
In this class we will be reading Agatha Christie's mystery novel And Then There Were None. Most of the reading will be done in class, but once in awhile you will need to finish reading at home. Be sure you keep up with the reading since there will be reading quizzes along the way. Also, if you read ahead in the novel be sure you don't spoil the ending for others. That is the best part of a mystery--- figuring out "who did it". I will give you a "detective diary" at the beginning. Be sure to keep up with this as we read since it will be due at the end of the unit. Last week we got up to chapter 12 (you were supposed to have 12 read for last Friday). In class on Monday we will read chapter 13. You should have the chapter 12 and 13 questions ready for Tuesday 5/15. On Tuesday we will go over chapter 12 and 13 questions. Since school is closed on Wednesday be sure you are caught up (through chapter 13) when you come back on Thursday 5/17!

Vocabulary:
Each week you will be given a list of 20 vocabulary words. You should use 15 of the words (any 15 you choose) in your own sentences by Wednesday of that week. You must show me, with context clues, that you understand the meaning of the word within your sentence. On Friday you will take a quiz over the words including using them as the correct part of speech. Be sure you are understanding the words, not just memorizing them as there will be sentences on the quiz. Each week you will also have review words from the previous weeks. I highly suggest you use index cards or the Quizlet app on your smartphone to help you review and keep up with the words. Each week the sentences should have a "theme" - meaning all of your sentences must deal with that concept/theme/idea. You will find the theme in parentheses after each list. You can always turn your sentences in on Tuesdays instead of Wednesdays for 3 points extra credit. You can find all the lists below. We are currently on list #14 and sentences this week are due on Thursday since school is closed on Wednesday.

Graduation Project:
One of the biggest parts of this semester will be the completion of the Graduation Project you began in English III. You will take the information from your research paper and turn it into a presentation and product. Portfolios will be given back for you to review - you should have a copy of your rough draft of research paper, final draft of research paper, and a research reflection in there at this point. If you are missing any of those components you should go to the BHS website and get them completed as soon as possible. If you did not attend a CMS school for English III you will need to see me ASAP to get the alternative assignment to take the place of the research paper! Students enrolled in English IV this semester will present to the board on April 24 or 25. You can also go to the Graduation Project link at the top of this page for specific instructions and ideas. Remember, you can not print in the room or from chromebooks so be sure you leave yourself enough time to go to the Media Center or the lab to get things printed.
Your first assignment was your product proposal. This is where you will tell me what ideas you are thinking for your actual product. This proposal should have been turned in by Thursday, February 1st.
Next was the resume for the portfolio. We reviewed a sample resume and some directions in class. The rough drafts were due on Feb. 19. You don't need to turn in revised copy unless you want to, both the rough draft and revised copy go in the final portfolio.
We just finished working on the rough draft of the Review Board Letter. We went over the directions and a sample in class.. This is the first thing the judges will read when it comes to the portfolio so please make a good first impression. The rough draft was due on Tuesday 3/6. Those have been returned to you with editing marks. You should revise your corrections and make three copies of the final draft to go in your portfolio.
We are now working on the speech outline. We went over the format and the sample in class. In a nutshell, this outline will be the plan of what your speech will look like for the judges. Be sure to follow the outline format that is on the direction sheet - it is specific for the graduation project. The rough draft of the outline was due by Tuesday March 20.
You should be working on the final piece of the portfolio now - the Graduation Project reflection - this covers your thoughts about the process over the two year period. This should was due on Monday 4/16 for 1st period and Tuesday 4/17 for 4th period.
Your times for April 24th and 25th are posted at the front of the room in case you have forgotten. Remember, do NOT be late to your appointment time! That is very important!
